Towards the end of 2022, Jeremie experienced some of the worst unrest I’ve ever seen. The country was protesting “Lavi Che,” the impossible rise of living costs. I don’t know why, but the angry group of protestors turned their attention to the NGO’s in Jeremie; organizations they thought were a part of taking money meant for helping Haiti, but instead were squandering it. They began attacking organizations in town, breaking down their gates, looting and destroying their buildings, and burning their vehicles. They had completely destroyed three compounds and then we heard the news that they were headed toward Haiti Bible Mission. We prepared as best we could with our security staff, but really prayer was our best defense. As the mob came to our gate, our head of security boldly met them face to face. At the same time, people in the community began to come and gather in front of the angry protestors, speaking on behalf of all HBM does for Jeremie, convincing them that we truly help and are needed in the community. They stood their ground before the angry mob. To our relief, the mob was convinced! They moved on, unfortunately destroying the compound of an organization not far from HBM. I will never forget, the humbling sight of all of the people willing to put their own safety at risk to stand up for HBM in that moment. It is a testament to the relationships and work we’ve put into this community. I’m proud to be a part of the work God is doing at Haiti Bible Mission.
